Blog #23 Reflections so far with Color Purple

After watching most of the video, and gaining a truely visable approach to the times, i am a little uneasy. When ever i think about the problems that any of the characters went through, i start to think about what would of happened if that still happened today. Then i realize that it probably does still happen today.

I usually prefer to avoid the topics portrayed in this film, for it makes me uneasy. Come to think of it, any movie where people are abused/tortured, i tend to avoid. Maybe because i am blessed with a life that doesn’t contain these problems, and could not imagine them happening to me.

Blog #20 Master of Two Worlds

The Master of Two Worlds phase of the monomyth entails the enlightenment of the hero to the fact that there is really nothing blocking the two worlds from each other. An understanding of “chaos and unity” allows the hero to become a fuller character. An example of this would be in the third Matrix movie, when neo becomes aware of the connection between the matrix and the real world. He acquires the ability to use his “powers” outside of the matrix, and inevitably uses them to help him continue his journey.

An example of my life for the Master of Two Worlds phase of the monomyth would be my relationship with philosophy. I am aware that philosophy is not just a topic or interest, it is life. Not in the area that we all should live philosophy, rather the understanding that philosophy is life.

Blog #19 Crossing the Return Threshold

An example of a Hero crossing the return threshold of his/her journey would be in the video game “Assassin’s Creed”. In the game, you live the life of an assassin named Altaïr. In the game, you are to carry out the assassinations of 9 influential characters during the time. After each mission, you must return to your home in order to proceed to the next mission. The entering to your kingdom would include the “return threshold” part of the monomyth.

I know my example is of a videogame, but who is to say that what we observe in movies and books can not be portrayed in videogames?
